Originally from Germany, Geurt relocated to Nijmegen, Netherlands in 1952. He has since called it home and even served as a dedicated mathematics teacher at a local secondary school until his retirement in 1983. His remarkable journey as a chess arbiter has seen him officiate at key events, including the Chess Olympiads of 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2006. Furthermore, he played pivotal roles in prominent matches and tournaments, such as the Kasparov-Karpov (1987, 1990), Karpov-Kamsky (1996), Karpov-Anand (1998), FIDE World Championship (1999), and the Kramnik-Topalov face-off in 2006.
Apart from his significant contributions as an arbiter, Geurt has also left his mark as a chess author. His books on the game provide valuable insights to enthusiasts.
