It’s been half a decade since Arkady Dvorkovich was chosen as the leader of FIDE, the global governing body for chess. His election in 2018 in Batumi, Georgia, marked the beginning of a new era for the International Chess Federation. He was re-elected in 2022 in Chennai, India, succeeding the long-standing president, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
The American Chess Bulletin, reflecting on this monumental occasion in 1924, wrote, “…we shall soon have a central authority… to bring together lovers of the game from distant parts of the earth.”
To honor its illustrious journey, FIDE has lined up a series of celebratory events for 2024:
Historical Showcases: From exhibitions displaying invaluable chess memorabilia to the FIDE 100-year Jubilee Book by Willy Iclicki, the year will be a trip down memory lane. An online chess museum, showcasing rare photographs and unique FIDE publications, will also be available for enthusiasts worldwide.
Global Tournaments: Chess events are planned worldwide, ensuring players from every corner can partake in this monumental celebration.
Chess Torch Relay: Beginning in India, the cradle of chess, and culminating in Budapest, Hungary – the venue for the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad – this relay aims to symbolize the global passion for the game.
World Guinness Record Attempt: On July 20, International Chess Day, FIDE will aim to set a new record for the highest number of chess games played in a single day.
Centenary Gala: The anniversary celebrations will reach their zenith with a grand gala in Paris, the birthplace of FIDE.
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich captures the essence of the celebration by highlighting FIDE’s foundational motto “Gens una Sumus”. He emphasizes the federation’s role in promoting chess’s global popularity. With the Chess Torch Relay initiating in India, the sport’s birthplace, it showcases the game’s journey from its roots to its present worldwide acclaim.
Starting September 23, FIDE’s social media will commence a 100-day countdown, taking followers on a historical journey. Each post, adorned with the #FIDE100 hashtag, will highlight a pivotal moment from FIDE’s rich past. These moments will encompass key milestones like the inauguration of the Chess Olympiad (1927), FIDE’s stewardship of the World Chess Championship (1948), and its recognition by the International Olympic Committee (1999).
Dana Reizniece-Ozola, Deputy Chair of the FIDE Management Board, encapsulates the spirit of this celebration, stating, “FIDE has been shaping the chess world for a century, always striving for excellence and serving the global chess community.”
