2023 FIDE World Senior Championship Begins in Terrasini with Michael Adams, Jhon Nunn, and Nona Gaprindashvili

In Terrasini, Italy, the 31st FIDE World Senior Championship started on October 25, 2023. Italy has welcomed this event nine times, including this year on the scenic Sicily island.

Hosted by FIDE, the Italian Chess Federation, UniChess, and Accademia Scacchistica Monrealese, 271 players from 53 countries are competing for the World Senior Champion title in Open 50+, Open 65+, and Women categories.

For this year’s championship, the FIDE Events Commission combined the Women 50+ and 65+ groups into one 11-game Swiss event. But, prizes for Women 50+ and 65+ will be based on the final scores.

The prize pool reached a new high at €42,500.

The event began with a planning session and a short ceremony. IA Ashot Vardapetyan, ECU Vicepresident Eva Repkova, and GM Roberto Mogranzini led the ceremony. WGM and IM Eva Repkova made the opening move in a match between GM Nona Gaprindashvili from Georgia and WFM Mira Kierzek from Germany. Then, the games started.

Chief referee IA Ashot Vardapetyan from Armenia oversees the matches. All games are live-streamed.

Top players include GM Michael Adams from England (Open 50+), GM Jhon Nunn from England (Open 65+), and GM Nona Gaprindashvili from Georgia (Women’s group).
